Official Statement:
Advancing Workers’ Rights and Social Justice in Somaliland
Issued by: The Somaliland Trade Union Federation (STUF)
Date: March 7, 2026
The Somaliland Trade Union Federation (STUF), as the national umbrella organization representing organized labor and sector-based unions across the Republic of Somaliland, reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all workers.
In alignment with ILO Convention No. 87 (Freedom of Association) and Convention No. 98 (Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining), STUF declares its dedication to the following core pillars of labor advocacy:
1. Strengthening Social Dialogue and Tripartism
STUF emphasizes that sustainable economic development is only possible through inclusive social dialogue. We call upon the Government of Somaliland and employers’ organizations to prioritize tripartite consultations to ensure that labor policies reflect the realities and needs of the workforce.
2. Promoting Decent Work and Fair Compensation
Every worker in Somaliland deserves a decent standard of living. We continue to advocate for the establishment of a national minimum wage and the rigorous enforcement of the Somaliland Labour Act No. 31/2020 to prevent exploitation and ensure fair compensation for all.
3. Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)
The safety of our workers is non-negotiable. STUF demands that all workplaces adhere to international health and safety standards. We urge the Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs, and Family to increase workplace inspections to guarantee that every employee can work in an environment free from hazards.
4. Protection of Fundamental Rights
We stand firmly against all forms of child labor, forced labor, and workplace discrimination based on gender, religion, or clan origin. STUF will continue to provide legal support and education to its members to ensure they can reclaim and defend their fundamental rights under the law.
5. Climate Justice and a Just Transition
As Somaliland faces increasing environmental challenges, STUF advocates for a Just Transition that puts workers at the center of climate action. We demand that climate-related policies integrate labor considerations to protect those in vulnerable sectors and create new, green, decent work opportunities.
Conclusion:
STUF remains a free, independent, and democratic voice for the working class. We call on all workers across the Republic to unite under our banner to build a future defined by social justice, economic equity, and respect for the rule of law.
Signed,
The Executive Board
